I have a class on Saturday mornings at 9 a.m. It is my first year experience class that I have to take. It wouldn't be so bad if I didn't work a 12 hour shift the night before at P&G unloading boxes off of a truck. It is so hard for me to get off of work at 6 in the morning, get home by 6:30 and shower an everything then be back up and leave my house by 8:30 to be there on time. Sometimes I debate with myself on whether or not to go to bed because I usually only get like an hour of sleep so sometimes it is just easier and less tiring for me to just stay up and just wait till I have to leave to be in class by 9 and then sit in class for 5 hours. It is so long because I only take it for 3 Saturdays this month so they have to cram it all into those three classes. After I get out of class at 2 I go home and sleep until 4 and leave my house by 5 to be at work by 5:30 for another 12 hour shift. On the bright side my teacher is very fun and full of energy which helps get me through the class and keep me awake for the most part. As much as I like my teacher I cannot wait for this class to be over so I can finally get some sleep before I start my next day of work!
Aggie, I know exactly how you feel about not getting any sleep because of work and school. Im beginning to get a bigger picture on how this is happening to a lot of other people besides me in college. I always thought teenagers going to college after school had it made because they didnt or wasent working and had all the time in the world to study for test and get assignments done, but I guess I was totally wrong. As far has I can see I think their are at least half of us in Com alone that works and goes to school. Its a frightening situation for all of us not getting the rest that we need. Its not good for our mind or body. Just like you I usually get around a hour or a hour and half sleep everynight. Now that 12 hour shift, I congratulate you on that because no way for me would I be able to do that. Hopefully thats not everday out of the week that you have to work those hours. Your lucky to have a teacher with enthusiasm to help keep you awake. Im taking two classes that are boring and I always want to dose off. The worst part is sometimes at work and while driving home from school, which takes an hour , makes me tired. I have already taken the First Year Experience class and I loved it. I learned alot in that class. How about you? Do you feel that you learned alot of things that you will use for your other classes? What did you think about the e-profolio that we had to do for that class? I enjoyed doing it. Mine was on Diversity. What was yours on? Do you like working at P&G? I was thinking about putting my application in over their but just havent yet. And also just wanting to mention that I would definitely hate going to school on a Saturday morning. Going to school Monday through Thursdays for me is bad enough.
That is quite amazing that you do that with such little sleep, but at least you only have to take the class for three saturdays. I did not even know that the class was offered in that maner. You will be done with the class and have it out of your way in no time. Any other way would have taken you five weeks. Or seven now by the way semesters go. Keep your head up and just know it will be over soon. And of corse take naos when you can. I wonder how I do it with kids, but lack of sleep like that is very difficult. I'm glad you have a plan and are working through your obsticles to get things done. Thats what it takes in life sometimes and it's not all fun and games.
Oh my god, I know exactly how you feel Aggie! I work thirds too as an STNA. It is extremely hard to go in around 10 pm and get off at 6 am and get maybe two hours of sleep and try and stay awake all day for classes. It’s unrealistic. I’ve tried staying up and not going to sleep for a little while and it seriously does not work for me! I would love to know how you do it! I’m currently trying to find another job where I can work more hours. Since school has started I dropped down to working every other weekend because I couldn’t go to school anymore on three hours of sleep. Now trying to find another job is so hard! I used to waitress so I’m thinking of trying to find a job as a waitress again. Anything other than working thirds would work for me! That’s great that you have fun and energetic teachers that would definitely help with staying awake. I hope they understand that you may tired when you have to go to school on zero hours of sleep. I’m sure they do. The first year experience class is so easy though! I was so happy when it was finally over. I honestly thought it was a waste of time but I had a great teacher who was very mellow and would help anyone. I’d have to say I wish all my classes were that easy! Good luck with the rest of your classes and the first year experience class will be over sooner than you think!
So far my favorite class probably has to be my Intro to CJ class. I already know almost everything that is being taught to mw in there. I love. I know all of it because I went to a career tech school in Columbus. It was called Eastland Career Center. There I took criminal justice just like my major. I took it for two years and my teacher was an retired liquor agent and he is the Command Chief at Ricinback for the Air force, he’s kind of a big deal if I say so myself. So he pretty much taught me everything I needed to know to be successful. He always told me “don’t let some man run your life, he’ll leave you barefoot and pregnant. “What he means by that is that he will come and swoop you off your feet and make you believe that he will take care of you and everything so you don’t really need to go to college he’s got it under control, and then he’ll knock you up and just leave you hanging. I will never let a man try and do everything for me, I am very independent and I like to be able to say “yep, I got that myself.” I like to be able to stand high and proud. In my Intro class we only meet once a week on Thursdays. It’s my late day. I am at school from noon until around 8 at night. The teacher in that class is a woman and she seems very confident in what she has to say and what she does. She is a very nice lady.
Okay, soooo I feel extremely bad for you. First of all you have a class on Saturday mornings??? That, for lack of better words, sucks. Not only do you have class but it just so happens to be the First Year Experience class. I am happy that you enjoy that class but I certainly do not. My class is on Wednesday mornings and I absolutely dread every single second of it. My teacher is not very enthusiastic and nobody in the class takes her seriously. We all literally watch the clock and mess on our phones the entire time. Not to mention the homework in the class is just busy work! I don’t know if you have to but our teacher assigns for us to do three journal entries and a goal assignment. They are all due by the next class time but she only picks one of the assignments for us to turn in to her. I hate that! I could have been doing my other homework rather than wasting it away on homework that is not even worth doing. Can you sense my bitterness? Haha I am fortunate enough to live close by and to get adequate amounts of sleep. I would not how you would do it getting through that class without closing your eyes; especially consider you work all night the night before. Your job does not sound fun…at all. Fortunately for the both of us there are not very many of these classes left! Soon you will be able to go home right after work and SLEEP! ☺
